It is no longer enough to create loose networks or paperwork-heavy funding programmes to support businesses. 5th Annual Meeting of the OECD LEED Forum on Partnerships and Local Governance - ‘Building Strong Partnerships with the Private Sector for Better Jobs and Inclusion’ Public sector institutions increasingly understand that working with business at the local level is crucial for promoting good quality jobs and social inclusion. More and more regions and localities are attempting to gear education and training to business requirements. They are devoting their efforts to the identification of future employment needs, and the assessment of gaps to ensure that local people have the right training to succeed in the local economy.

The 2008 URBACT annual Conference took place in Montpellier in the south of France. From Sunday evening, November 30th, to Tuesday, December 2nd 2008 at midday, 450 participants representing 220 cities from forty countries attended the event.
During the official plenary sessions Metka Cernelc Chair of the Urbact Monitoring Committee and Dirk Ahner Director General of DG Regional Policy at the European Comission talked about the future of the Cohesion Policy and the territorial cooperation programmes.
